English translations of Greek and Cypriot court, notarial and registry documents, and Australian documents translated into Greek.
Greek legal work often concerns family property in Greece or Cyprus: inheritance, sale of land and the paperwork needed to deal with it from Australia. Greek courts include the Magistrates' Court (Ειρηνοδικείο), the Court of First Instance (Πρωτοδικείο), the Court of Appeal (Εφετείο) and the Supreme Civil and Criminal Court (Άρειος Πάγος).
Names are the most common problem. Greek documents give a person's father's name and often mother's name, usually in the genitive case, and a surname takes a different form for men and women. Transliteration into English varies, so the same name might be Georgios, Yiorgos or George on different papers. Send any passport or Australian document showing your spelling so the translator can take its spelling into account.
Older documents may be written in katharevousa, the formal register of Greek used in official writing until the 1970s, with archaic legal vocabulary. Greek property terms, such as horizontal property ownership (οριζόντια ιδιοκτησία) and land registry or cadastre references, have no direct Australian equivalent, so they are translated with care rather than forced into an Australian term. Tax numbers (ΑΦΜ) and registry references are reproduced exactly.
Documents from Cyprus follow the Cypriot court and registry system and may include English text already; we translate the Greek parts and note what was already in English.
We translate Australian documents into Greek for Greece and Cyprus: powers of attorney for property, death certificates and wills for inheritance, divorce orders and statutory declarations. Greek notaries and consulates may want an apostille or their own form of attestation, so check with them first.
Greek certificates are now often issued electronically through government portals and carry a verification code instead of a wet stamp. Upload them as PDFs where possible so the code stays readable. For an inheritance matter, a bundle may include the death certificate, the family status certificate, the will, the record of its publication (πρακτικό δημοσίευσης διαθήκης) and the certificate of inheritance. Tell us which documents you need so we can quote the whole set together.
We translate what your documents say. We do not advise on their legal effect, and we cannot confirm whether a particular court or agency will accept them. Please check requirements with the receiving body or your lawyer.
Yes. This is one of the most common jobs we see. Check with the notary or lawyer in Greece whether they also want an apostille on the Australian document.
Send your passport or Australian documents with your order so the translator can take its spelling into account, so the names match across your paperwork.
Yes. Older registry entries and court decisions in formal Greek are translated in the same way as modern documents.
