Hindi Legal Document Translation

English translations of Hindi court, police, revenue and municipal documents from India, and Australian documents translated into Hindi.

Hindi legal documents we commonly see

Higher courts in India mostly work in English, but district courts, police stations, revenue offices and municipal bodies in the Hindi-speaking states often issue documents in Hindi, or in a mix of Hindi and English on the same page.

What makes Hindi legal documents tricky

Hindi legal and revenue writing borrows heavily from Urdu and Persian administrative vocabulary, so a land record or court order uses terms such as khasra, tehsil and vaad that a modern Hindi dictionary will not explain well. Many have no Australian equivalent, so the original term may be kept in transliteration.

Names often appear without a fixed surname, or with a father's name used in its place, and the same person may be spelled differently across documents. A copy of your passport helps keep spellings consistent. Dates are usually Gregorian, but some documents also give a Vikram Samvat date, which is translated as written. Handwritten entries on printed forms are common and are translated in place, with anything unreadable marked as illegible.

Where a page is partly in English already, we translate the Hindi parts and show the English parts as they appear, so the reader sees the whole document.

English into Hindi for use overseas

We translate Australian documents into Hindi: powers of attorney for property in India, statutory declarations, divorce orders and police checks. Indian authorities and courts may want an apostille or attestation steps, so check with the receiving office first.

Preparing Hindi documents

Indian documents are often photocopies stamped as true copies, and the stamp may sit over the text. Scan at high resolution so the overlapping text can be read. Court orders frequently come as certified copies with a separate sheet from the copying department showing the application and delivery dates; send that sheet too, as it forms part of the certified copy. Land records downloaded from a state portal should be uploaded as the original PDF rather than a phone photo of a printout.

Translation, not legal advice

We translate what your documents say. We do not advise on their legal effect, and we cannot confirm whether a particular court or agency will accept them. Please check requirements with the receiving body or your lawyer.
