Indonesian Legal Document Translation

English translations of Indonesian court, civil registry and notarial documents, and Australian documents translated into Indonesian.

Indonesian legal documents we commonly see

Indonesia runs two parallel court systems for family matters: the District Courts (Pengadilan Negeri) for non-Muslims and the Religious Courts (Pengadilan Agama) for Muslims. Marriages are recorded either by the Religious Affairs Office (Kantor Urusan Agama, KUA) or by the civil registry, Dinas Kependudukan dan Pencatatan Sipil (Dukcapil).

What makes Indonesian legal documents tricky

Many Indonesians have only one name, or several given names with no family name. Australian forms expect a surname, but the translation reproduces the name exactly as it appears and does not invent a split. Where your passport shows the name differently, send a copy so the translator can take its spelling into account.

Indonesian legal writing uses formal phrases with no direct English counterpart, such as menimbang (considering) and mengadili (adjudicating), and Religious Court divorce documents use Islamic legal terms like talak and cerai gugat. We keep the Indonesian term beside the English. Documents also abbreviate heavily: RT, RW, Kel. and Kec. for local administrative units, and NIK for the national identity number, all reproduced as written.

A Kartu Keluarga lists every household member, with religion, education and occupation for each, and its table layout is kept in the translation.

English into Indonesian for use overseas

We translate Australian documents into Indonesian: divorce orders and certificates, powers of attorney, statutory declarations, police checks and company documents. Indonesian offices may want an apostille or their own sworn translation, so check with the receiving office before you order.

Preparing Indonesian documents

Civil registry documents issued by Dukcapil now often carry a QR code and an electronic seal instead of a wet stamp. Upload the original PDF if you received one, so the code stays legible. A Kartu Keluarga is reissued each time the household changes, so check that your copy is the current one, or the one the receiving body asked for. A buku nikah is a booklet with separate pages for husband and wife; scan every page that carries entries, including the page naming the marriage registrar.

Translation, not legal advice

We translate what your documents say. We do not advise on their legal effect, and we cannot confirm whether a particular court or agency will accept them. Please check requirements with the receiving body or your lawyer.
