Portuguese Legal Document Translation

English translations of court, registry and notarial documents from Brazil, Portugal and other Portuguese-speaking countries, and English into Portuguese.

Portuguese legal documents we commonly see

Most Portuguese documents we translate come from Brazil or Portugal, and the two systems name things differently. In Brazil, records are issued by a registry office (Cartório de Registro Civil) and cases go to state courts (Tribunais de Justiça) through divisions called varas. In Portugal, civil records are kept by the Conservatória do Registo Civil and cases go to the judicial courts of each district (comarca).

What makes Portuguese legal documents tricky

Names often include several surnames, and Portuguese order usually places the mother's family name before the father's, the reverse of Spanish. Married names may add or drop surnames. We reproduce names in full and in the order written.

In Brazil, a divorce is usually shown by an annotation (averbação) on the marriage certificate, so the certificate itself is often the key document; we translate every annotation. A Brazilian divorce can also be granted by public deed at a notary's office (escritura pública de divórcio), which produces a notarial document rather than a court judgment. Court divisions such as the Vara de Família e Sucessões have no Australian counterpart and are kept by name. Identity numbers such as the Brazilian CPF and the Portuguese NIF are reproduced exactly.

Documents from Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde and Timor-Leste follow their own systems and are translated using their own headings.

English into Portuguese for use overseas

We translate Australian documents into Brazilian or European Portuguese: divorce orders, powers of attorney, statutory declarations, police checks and company documents. Tell us which country the document is for. Check with the receiving office whether it also wants an apostille.

Preparing Portuguese documents

Brazilian certificates from a cartório may be issued as full-text certificates (inteiro teor) or brief certificates (breve relato), which contain different detail. Check with the body you are submitting to which one they want.

Translation, not legal advice

We translate what your documents say. We do not advise on their legal effect, and we cannot confirm whether a particular court or agency will accept them. Please check requirements with the receiving body or your lawyer.
