Serbian Legal Document Translation

English translations of Serbian court, registry and notarial documents in Cyrillic or Latin script, and Australian documents translated into Serbian.

Serbian legal documents we commonly see

Serbian courts are organised as Basic Courts (Osnovni sud), Higher Courts (Viši sud), Courts of Appeal (Apelacioni sud) and the Supreme Court (Vrhovni sud). Civil status is recorded in the registers of births, marriages and deaths (matične knjige) kept by local registrars, and inheritance is often dealt with by a notary (javni beležnik) or a court.

What makes Serbian legal documents tricky

Serbian is written in both Cyrillic and Latin script, sometimes on the same document, and older papers may be from Yugoslav institutions that no longer exist. We translate from whichever script is used and give institutions their names as printed. Documents from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro use related but different court and registry names, so tell us where your document was issued.

Names carry diacritics, č, ć, š, ž and đ, which are often lost in English records. They are kept as they appear on the document; if your passport drops them, send a copy so the translator can take its spelling into account. A Cyrillic name transliterated letter by letter can produce a spelling the person never uses, so a passport copy helps. An inheritance decision lists heirs, their shares and the assets in detail, and that list is reproduced exactly.

Register extracts issued on international multilingual forms already show field labels in several languages; we translate the entries rather than repeating the printed labels.

English into Serbian for use overseas

We translate Australian documents into Serbian, in Cyrillic or Latin as you prefer: powers of attorney for property, death certificates for inheritance, divorce orders and statutory declarations. Serbian offices usually want an apostille as well, so check with them first.

Preparing Serbian documents

Register extracts from Serbia are now often issued from the central electronic register. If you also hold an older handwritten extract, send both so names and dates can be checked against each other. Scan the reverse of any page that carries a court or notary stamp.

Translation, not legal advice

We translate what your documents say. We do not advise on their legal effect, and we cannot confirm whether a particular court or agency will accept them. Please check requirements with the receiving body or your lawyer.
