Thai Legal Document Translation

English translations of Thai court and district office documents, and Australian documents translated into Thai.

Thai legal documents we commonly see

In Thailand, marriages, divorces by mutual consent and name changes are registered at the district office: the อำเภอ (amphoe) in the provinces or the เขต (khet) in Bangkok. Contested matters go to the provincial courts (ศาลจังหวัด) or the Juvenile and Family Courts (ศาลเยาวชนและครอบครัว).

What makes Thai legal documents tricky

Thai documents use the Buddhist Era calendar (พ.ศ.), which runs 543 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar, and they may write numbers in Thai numerals (๒๕๖๖). The date is translated as written, so a date of birth or registration matches the original exactly.

Thai has no single official romanisation, so a name can be spelled several ways in English. Send a copy of your passport so the translator can take its spelling into account. Names carry a title prefix such as นาย (Mr), นาง (Mrs) or นางสาว (Miss), and a change from นางสาว to นาง on a later document reflects a change in marital status that the translation preserves. Name changes are common in Thailand and each one produces a certificate, so a person may need several translated to link one name to another.

A divorce registration certificate may refer to an attached memorandum of agreement on property or children; if you have it, upload it too.

English into Thai for use overseas

We translate Australian documents into Thai: marriage, divorce and birth documents for registration at a Thai district office, powers of attorney, statutory declarations and police checks. Thai offices and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs may have legalisation steps, so check with them first.

Preparing Thai documents

District offices issue certified copies of registry entries on official paper, each with the stamp of the registrar and a note certifying it as a true copy. Upload the whole page, including the bottom where that certification appears. Thai court judgments can run to many pages with an attached summary of the case; if you only need the judgment itself, tell us which pages. Where a first name or surname has changed, also send any document showing the old name, such as an older house registration page, so the translation can be read alongside it.

Translation, not legal advice

We translate what your documents say. We do not advise on their legal effect, and we cannot confirm whether a particular court or agency will accept them. Please check requirements with the receiving body or your lawyer.
