Vietnamese Legal Document Translation

English translations of Vietnamese court, civil status and notarial documents, and Australian documents translated into Vietnamese.

Vietnamese legal documents we commonly see

In Vietnam, civil and family cases are heard by the People's Courts (Tòa án nhân dân), at district, provincial and higher levels. Civil status records are issued by the People's Committee (Ủy ban nhân dân) of a commune or ward, and copies are often certified by a local authority before they are sent overseas.

What makes Vietnamese legal documents tricky

Vietnamese uses a Latin alphabet with extensive diacritics, and a missing tone mark can turn one name into another. Names are reproduced with their diacritics as they appear on the document; if your passport shows them differently, send a copy so the translator can take its spelling into account.

Administrative place names change as provinces, districts and wards are merged or renamed, so an older document may name a district that no longer exists. We translate the name printed on the document. Court decisions often open with the full name of the court, the case number and the composition of the bench, and they close with rights of appeal; we keep that structure intact. A judicial record certificate comes in two forms, No. 1 and No. 2, which contain different information, and the translation shows which one you hold.

Older documents may use the terms of an earlier administrative system. We translate them as written rather than modernising the wording.

English into Vietnamese for use overseas

We also translate Australian documents into Vietnamese: divorce orders and certificates, powers of attorney for property in Vietnam, statutory declarations, police checks and business documents. Vietnamese authorities frequently have legalisation steps of their own, so check with the office receiving the document what it needs.

Translation, not legal advice

We translate what your documents say. We do not advise on their legal effect, and we cannot confirm whether a particular court or agency will accept them. Please check requirements with the receiving body or your lawyer.

Will my name keep its Vietnamese accents?

Yes. Names are reproduced with their diacritics. If your passport uses an unaccented spelling, mention it and send a copy with your order.

Can you translate a Vietnamese judicial record certificate?

Yes. We translate both the No. 1 and No. 2 forms of the Phiếu lý lịch tư pháp, keeping every field and the issuing department's details.
